Q. What Do I Wear?
A. You will be loaned a flight suit. Closed shoes and a sweatshirt are required for warmth.
Q. Will I be able to communicate to my instructor?
A. Yes, you'll be equipped with a noise cancelling headset and helmet.
Q. How safe is it?
A. Birds in Paradise has a 100% safety record, with over 12,000 happy customers to date. We use the latest state of the art aircraft, equipped with a back-up rocket propelled parachute system, a GPS emergency location transmitter and transponder, and each student wears a floatation device. Your main safety feature is your instructor Gerry Charlebois who has been flying weight shift aircraft since 1979. In 1981 he started flying student tandem in hanggliders off the cliffs in Oahu. Gerry was a sponsored hangglider pilot competing around the world in flying competitions and was a two time Hawaii state hanggliding champion. He has been flying and living on Kauai since 1988.
Q. Can we fly without an instructor, as a couple together?
A. No, we have found that the quality and safety of your flight depends upon the knowledge of Kauai's weather conditions and on having the years of experience that our pilots have.
Q. If bad weather causes our flight to be cancelled, do we lose our money?
A. Absolutely not, we will reschedule you, if your plans allow.
Q. What if the engine fails?
A. We are essentially flying a glider that has a 10-1 glide ratio, which means that at 2000 feet, in zero wind we can glide 20,000 feet forward. Keep in mind we are powered by a four stroke aircraft engine that's very reliable.
Q. Do I need to worry about motion sickness?
A. No, due to the open cockpit and stability of the Trike, nausea is rare.
